Stephen and I elected not to pierce Evie's ears. While it is very common for AA female infants to have theirs pierced, we decided we would rather not. Though I worry that Evie will feel left out among her peers for our decision, I feel it is important that she understand our reasons for not piercing her ears.
1. I'm not crazy about how pierced ears look on infants and toddlers. You're growing up fast enough as it is. Why would I want you to look any older? I'm not in a hurry for you to grow up.
2. I bawled when you got shots as an infant, and those shots are to keep you healthy. I cannot imagine how torn up I'd be to see you getting "stuck" for accessories. I'm sure the guilt would eventually subside, but the image of you in pain haunts me for life.
3. I wasn't going to push my luck and assume you would be a champ about letting me twist the earrings and clean around them. Praise The Lord, you've always let me trim your nails and give you medicine. I wouldn't want to take advantage of your laid back attitude for 6-8 weeks of ear care.
4. They are your ears. I want you to make your own age-appropriate choices when you are able to take responsibility for them. If you decide you want your ears pierced, we'll honor your choice and take you to get it done. You will then be responsible to taking care of your pierced ears.
Please understand that I do NOT judge parents who elect to pierce their infant's ears. It's your child. I expect there are some things I do for Evie that not everyone would do for their kids. I sit Evie in front of Yo Gabba Gabba for her hairstyling. I know there are moms out there who don't allow any tv time for their youngens. Bless you for that. As for us, DJ Lance is welcome anytime we need Evie to sit still for more than 10 seconds.
