I am fully aware that pets are not people. I am fully aware that when you commit to owning a pet, that at some point they will either have to be put down or they will die. I am fully aware that pets, like people, all die eventually. I am fully aware that dogs love you unconditionally from the moment you meet them. I am fully aware that pets see you at your best and your worst.
Even though I am fully aware of all of these things, and more, I will never regret opening my home to animals. I'll graciously take the pain of losing them in exchange for the years of unconditional love they give to their humans. There is nothing like the love of a pet.
Today I had to do what I have been dreading for years. I had to say goodbye and hand over a beloved family pet. Though Gretal was not "our dog", she was very much family. Mom and Dad got her shortly after I went to college 10 years ago. She's leaving behind 10 years of great memories and stories that will never be forgotten. She was a lizard-obsessed, Schultze-humping, water loving, fish-licking, squeaker-destroyer, rawhide-master.
We'll miss you Gretal! I firmly believe that all dogs go to heaven, so this is just farewell for now.

Amen. She's all better now. Love her and miss her already.
