Greetings blog readers! I apologize for my absence. I'm sure you were all losing a lot of sleep over it. ;-) As like so many of you, we have been incredibly busy in the weeks and days leading up to the holidays. I still haven't gotten Evie's 10 month pictures done, and we are quickly approaching her 11 month birthday. I cannot believe I just typed 11 month. Where has the time gone!? We were in Colorado when she turned 10 months old. and I've been going 100 mph since we landed back in Houston.
Since I last updated the blog...
Evie and I went to Colorado Springs to visit my Aunt and her family. It was Evie's first flight, and she did beautifully. On both sides of the round-trip flight, we were met with skeptical glances. I even told our seatmates, "Hey! You're the lucky person that gets to sit next to the lady with the baby!". This was met with a look of fear on the poor man/woman's face. Once I got settled I told them I was just kidding, and by the end of each flight both seatmates knew why it was a joke. Evie took a bottle on takeoff and then sacked out on me shortly after. When she was awake she was smiling and winning people over left and right. While in Colorado I got to see my two cousins perform in their dance company's production of the Nutcracker. They are such talented and beautiful young ladies! I cannot believe that Elle is 16 and preparing to move out of her house to attend a dance school full-time on the opposite side of the country! Julia is just as clever and sharp-witted as ever. I see a lot of Evie in Julia. During our stay I also got to see Naish receive his Eagle Scout award. I was a weeping mess (more on that below). I am just so proud of him for his commitment and perseverance. So many boys/men start boy scouts and quickly drop out. Naish stuck with it, and you can see how much he as grown as a man throughout the program. He's one of the rare breed of hard-working, kind, compassionate men out there in the world. It was a joy to share this trip with Evie. She loves her cousins, aunts, uncles, and grandma very much! She was just as content and easygoing in the new environment as she is at home. I shared a bedroom with her which was a bit challenging and fabulous at the same time. It was challenging because I have never shared a room with her before. Every time she moaned or rolled over, I woke up. Fortunately my time awake was spent listening to her dream and giggle in her sleep.
A couple of side notes about the trip to Colorado:
1. While we were there, the shooting in Newtown took place. This shooting has me really messed up. I basically spent the whole weekend fighting back tears. At Naish's Eagle Scout ceremony the flood gates opened as I thought about all of the young boys that never had the chance at making Eagle Scout. I've shed so many tears over the staff and student victims. As a former teacher, I hurt. As a mother, I hurt. As a human being, I hurt. I do find peace in that these staff and children are far away from the evils of mankind now. I continue to pray and hurt for the children that will be forced to confront the memories of this event for the rest of their lives.
2. As a white woman with an AA child, I am used to the stares I usually get when I am out with Evie. In Colorado it seemed like I was getting not only stares, but people were actually gawking at us. It was entertaining to an extent, but I just wish more people were aware of their reactions. Don't stare or gawk, smile at us. If people smile, we'll just smile back. The stares and gawking are not only weird, but I am forced to respond to them with raised eyebrows until they realize I totally see you.
All in all, it was a great trip. I think I will have no trouble raising a little world traveler!
Stephen is very busy at work. They are moving him over to mostly Colorado based projects now. He is traveling to Denver in a couple of weeks to attend meetings for these projects and to get familiar with his company's office in Denver. I'm really proud of his dedication to his work. It continues to allow me the means to spend my days with Evie.
My work had their annual Christmas luncheon this week. It was a great success! We had a nice turnout. The food and conversation were wonderful. I love seeing the employees get treated to lunch, gifts, and a bonu$!
We are currently at the lake house for few days. We are really looking forward to Evie's first Christmas morning.
I hope that you all have the best Christmas ever! I know this will be our favorite one! I'll be sure to take a lot of pictures!
SAVE THE DATE: Evie's First Birthday Party will be Feb. 16
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all!
