Oktoberfest 2011

Attending Oktoberfest was looking to become a tradition for our family in 2009.  We attended with some of my Dad's extended family and had a complete blast despite the depressing weather.  While we were there my grandmother called us to let us know that our grandfather wasn't feeling very well.  I remember thinking that while I was sorry he wasn't feeling well, he was a tough cookie and would rebound in no time.  Days after 2009 Oktoberfest my grandfather passed away.  Until that point I had been blessed to not lose any family members.

We did not attend 2010 Oktoberfest.  Instead we spent the time around the one year anniversary of Papa's passing with my grandmother.

Fast forward to this year...

We rented this fabulous house about 2 miles from the heart of Fredericksburg.  It was absolutely gorgeous and fully furnished on a whole lot of acreage!  Terms like dream house, perfect retirement come to mind to describe it.  There were 11 of us staying at this house.
My favorite thing; footed bathtub!  As a bath addict, this was the sweetest feature of the house we rented.
While I usually describe my heritage as Heinz 57 Sauce, I am mostly German-Czech.  Oktoberfest is a great time to polka and waltz with my Dad and hear some really talented musicians.  My favorite band of the weekend was, by far, The Sauerkrauts.  They were so very entertaining!

Stephen's mom and and dad were in Fredericksburg at the same time as we were, so we had lunch with them.  Stephen and his dad caught a WWII reenactment while his mom and I did some retail therapy.  It was a lovely afternoon!

I caught myself thinking back to this time, two years ago, a few times this weekend.  In a lot of ways it seems like time has flown since then, but in some ways it seems like it's taking more of an effort to mentally remember the sound of my Papa's voice.  Thankfully I have DVDs to listen to when I need to hear his voice.
